Gold protects savings mainly against a falling pound, because its EGP price follows the world price in dollars times the exchange rate. It pays no interest, it can fall hard, and you lose money on every round trip through the spread and workmanship fees. Bars and coins cost far less to buy and sell than jewellery.

Used well, gold is a long-term store of value, not a source of income.

Karats: 24K, 21K and 18K

A karat measures purity out of 24. 24K is pure gold, 21K is 21/24 gold (87.5%), and 18K is 18/24 (75%).

Prices follow that ratio. On 21 October 2026 at 3:40 pm, Dahab Masr quoted these prices per gram:

KaratGold contentBuy price (EGP per gram)Sell price (EGP per gram)
24K100%7,211.967,126.32
21K87.5%6,311.106,236.15
18K75%5,409.515,345.27
Gold pound (8 g of 21K)7 g pure50,488.80 per coin49,889.20 per coin

Check: 7,211.96 × 21 ÷ 24 = 6,310.47, within a pound of the quoted 21K price. Most Egyptian jewellery is 21K. Bars are usually 24K.

What you actually pay

The gram price is only part of the cost. There are three layers.

  1. Gold price: the karat price per gram above.
  2. Workmanship (masna'eya): a per-gram fee for making the piece. You pay it when you buy and don't get it back when you sell.
  3. Stamp and dealer fees: hallmarking stamp fees and any taxes added on the invoice. We could not find a published stamp fee figure, so ask for it on the invoice.

Then there is the spread. The buy price is what you pay; the sell price is what a dealer pays you. On 21 October 2026 the 21K gap was EGP 74.95 a gram, or about 1.2% of the buy price. That gap is the same 1.2% for 24K, 18K and the gold pound.

Bars vs coins vs jewellery

Workmanship is the biggest cost difference. Typical ranges reported in 2026:

FormTypical workmanshipSource and date
Bars (24K)From about EGP 60 a gram for larger barsAl-Dostor, June 2026
Gold pound (21K, 8 g)EGP 50–75 a gram, so EGP 400–600 a coinAkhbar El Yom, 9 October 2026
21K jewelleryEGP 150–300 a gramAhram Gate, July 2026
18K jewelleryEGP 200–500 a gramAhram Gate, July 2026

Ranges vary by shop, brand and design. Always ask for an invoice that shows the gram price, weight, karat and workmanship separately.

Break-even: how much gold must rise before you're even

Using the 21 October 2026 prices, here is how far the gold price must rise before selling covers what you paid. Fees are the workmanship ranges above.

What you buyYou pay per gram (EGP)Sell price per gram (EGP)Rise needed to break even
24K bar, EGP 60 workmanship7,271.967,126.322.0%
Gold pound, EGP 400–600 workmanship6,361–6,3866,236.152.0%–2.4%
21K jewellery, EGP 150 workmanship6,461.106,236.153.6%
21K jewellery, EGP 300 workmanship6,611.106,236.156.0%
18K jewellery, EGP 500 workmanship5,909.515,345.2710.6%

Put another way: EGP 100,000 in 21K jewellery at EGP 150 workmanship buys about 15.48 g, which you could sell straight back for about EGP 96,518.

Jewellery has real value to wear. As a pure savings tool, though, it starts further behind.

How EGP gold prices move

The local 24K price is roughly the world price per ounce in dollars, divided by 31.1035 grams, times the dollar rate in pounds.

On 21 October 2026 gold was $4,127.90 an ounce. At the CBE's 22 October rate of EGP 54.47 per dollar, that gives about EGP 7,229 a gram of 24K. Dahab Masr's 7,211.96 implies a rate of about 54.34, which is close.

Worked example: two forces, one price

Start from 24K at EGP 7,212 a gram. Here's what happens when world gold and the pound move:

ScenarioWorld gold (USD)Pound vs dollar24K price (EGP per gram)Change
Gold up, pound stable+10%0%7,933+10%
Gold flat, pound falls0%Dollar +10%7,933+10%
Both+10%Dollar +10%8,726+21%
Gold down, pound falls−10%Dollar +10%7,140−1%
Gold down, pound stable−10%0%6,491−10%

The two effects multiply: 1.10 × 1.10 = 1.21. If the pound is stable, you carry all of gold's dollar swings yourself.

Long-run history and its limits

The World Gold Council says the price of gold in US dollars has risen about 9% a year on average since 1971. That's a dollar figure. In EGP terms it would have been higher, because the pound fell a lot over that time.

The average hides painful stretches:

  • After its January 1980 peak, gold fell 71% and took about 28 years to regain its record.
  • After the September 2011 high, it fell 46%.
  • In 2026, gold hit $5,602 an ounce in January, then fell to a low of $3,942, nearly 30% lower.

These figures come from an IANS report (July 2026) on DSP research. On 21 October 2026, gold at $4,127.90 was still about 26% below that January peak.

Gold also pays no income. A certificate pays you every month; gold only gains if someone pays more for it later. With Egypt's urban inflation at 13.9% in September 2026, gold has to rise faster than that in EGP just to hold its real value.

Storage and safety

  • At home: free, but exposed to theft, fire and loss.
  • Bank safe deposit box: safer, with a yearly rent and branch-hours access.
  • Keep every invoice. Dealers pay more readily for pieces with a clear invoice, karat and stamp.
  • Buy from established dealers and check the hallmark stamp on jewellery.

Gold funds in Egypt

Egypt has gold investment funds regulated by the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA). By the end of March 2026 there were 6 such funds, with net assets of about EGP 9.28 billion across about 289,000 investor accounts.

According to Business Today Egypt (June 2026), managers buy and keep physical gold for investors, and units trade on the Egyptian Exchange like shares. You avoid workmanship and storage, but funds charge management fees and units can trade away from the gold price. Read the fund's prospectus for fees, how it prices units, and how you redeem. This guide doesn't recommend any specific fund.

Your plan: using gold as savings

  1. Decide gold's job. For most savers it's protection against a weaker pound, not income. Keep your emergency fund in cash or a liquid account, not gold.
  2. Set a share and stick to it. Choose a portion of your long-term savings for gold, so one asset's swings don't sink your plan.
  3. Pick the cheapest form for your goal. Bars and coins for saving; jewellery only if you'll wear it. A fund if you'd rather not store metal.
  4. Compare total cost. Ask at least two dealers for the gram price, workmanship and fees, and work out the break-even before you pay.
  5. Buy in steps. Spreading purchases over months smooths out the price you pay.
  6. Plan to hold for years. With a 2%–6% round-trip cost, short holds usually lose.
  7. Store it safely and file the invoices.
  8. Review once a year. Compare your gold's value in EGP against certificates using the same dates.

What to watch out for

  • Workmanship you can't recover. It's the biggest hidden cost in jewellery.
  • A stable or stronger pound. Then gold's EGP return depends only on world prices.
  • Long losing stretches. Gold has spent decades below past peaks.
  • Prices quoted without fees. Ask for the full invoice price.
